Yeast Infection Description
Yeast infections are caused by an excess growth of yeast cells in the vagina. Like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections occur when there is a change in the normal balance of organisms. The imbalance can be caused by various things, including medications. It is not a sexually transmitted disease. The most common symptoms of a yeast infection are vaginal itching, irritated genital skin, and white discharge. It is usually odorless, but pain or burning often occurs in the genital area with urination or sexual intercourse.
